The pier is believed to have been built in the 1850s. Although no exact completion date is known, the plans prepared and signed by D & T Stephenson are dated 1854. (This plan, drawn to a scale of 1 inch to 10 feet, can be found in the Map room of the National Museum of Scotland)
John Bruce and local fishermen teamed up to build the pier, with fisherman giving their financial contribution as free labour.
